New story, maybe?

These are a bunch of character designs I've been doing for a new book I've been thinking about. Normally at this stage my sketches are a lot looser but I've been thinking about going with Microns instead of the Japanese brush pens this time around and wanted to see how it would work out. It's a lot easier, I will say, and the hope is that I'll draw faster. The linework isn't as interesting I guess but I've never really been much of a virtuoso when it came to inking anyway, so I'm not sure how much people will even notice.

The story is about a 17 year-old working at a supermarket in that magical summer between high school and college. My plan at this point, is to do a very long story and release it as a series of 100 page trade paperbacks, but we'll see.

What is it about that kind of storyline that makes it so much fun to write? I'm working on the same type of thing myself at the moment. ;)

PROOF OF CONCEPT!!
I think it's because it's sort of benchmark of your childhood ending and your young adulthood beginning. The first year of college, especially when you move away from home for the first time, can result in dramatic changes.

Re: PROOF OF CONCEPT!!
Very well put!

I do find it interesting in a way that John Hughes skipped that time in life in his 80s-90s oeuvre...he went straight from high school to real life with nothing in between. Then again, Cameron Crowe beat him to it with Say Anything, and how can you top that movie? ;)

I like the publishing model. When the Big 3(or 4 or whatever it is now) catch on they'll do the same thing. I think people would much rather buy comics--lets say Batman, since it has like 4 titles--that come out quarterly and is 100 pages or so for $5 to 10 then the same title monthly for $4. Thinking like that could save the print side of the industry, so I wish you success (and yes, I'm saying saving the industry is up to you, and you alone).
On an inky note, I usually do everything with the Japanese Pentel Pocket Brush, but have been told to use microns for a paying gig. Its fun to have two styles going at the same time, and good exercise for my brain.

I agree with that publishing idea too - have wondered about it for a long time. I'd certainly get back into buying superhero comics if I could pick up a larger chunk of story at a time. probably never happen though!

Great news you're working on a possible new, lengthier series - Too Cool was too short in my eyes. I needs me more Robinson.

I love the idea of your storyline! I look forward to seeing more :)

Also, major congrats on Too Cool to be Forgotton being nominated. It was my favorite graphic novel last year.

Thanks!

My plan is to make each of the books more or less self-contained. This way if it bombs or I get sick of it I can stop (or at least take a break and work on other things in between).
