The other night, Kristen and I went to go see The Police play at Giants Stadium. I'm only a casual fan but they put on a good show and the crowd seemed pretty into it.
To me, one of the most interesting things was the opening act, Fiction Plane. Fiction Plane--or FicPla, as their fans call them--has been opening for them for the entire tour and they're an odd choice since I don't know anyone who's heard of them and you'd figure The Police could get some big name acts to open for them. Of course, not all acts have Sting's son as their lead singer, a distinct advantage for FicPla. To make it even more curious, FicPla is a trio, as are the Police, Sting's son plays bass, as does Sting, and he looks and sounds a lot like his famous father.
Watching them play to a one-third filled arena, lost in the vast openness of the stadium, it was easy to come up with so many stories about FicPla. On the one hand, you could imagine Sting's son being a nice enough guy who idolized his father and naturally he's going to be influenced. You could almost feel bad for the guy, so overwhelmed by his father's image that he not only couldn't escape his shadow but doesn't even realize he's in shadow.
On the other hand, you could also imagine him being a colossal dick. He could think he's just as talented as his dad but people are too dumb to realize it. He could think he really deserves to open on a hugely popular summer tour, that once people got to hear them they can't help but like them. Playing to the cavernous stadium, you could tell he was a little frustrated at the lack of enthusiasm from the hot crowd, and he dick scenario seemed more likely. Of course, we all have our bad days, so who knows?
Offhand, it seems like children, especially sons, of rock stars more often sound like their fathers than not. Offhand.
